Many of the men who came out with Ashley, Bonneville, and other renowned heroes, conceived the idea of making the mountains their abiding place. They paid dearly for their temerity, and the estimate is that three-fifths of this number met violent deaths at the hands of the Native Americans. A majority took Indian wives, but this only protected them from the particular tribes to which their wives belonged. The hereditary enemies of such tribes scalped these white men whenever the opportunity offered. When Fremont came into the country he found numerous white men who had married among Indians.Contents:Jim Beckwourth,Nathaniel J. Wyeth,James Bridger,Kit Carson,Jedediah S.
