For Knight-Commander Morgan McRobbie, it’s about to become deadly. When Morgan risks his life to save Marissa duBerry from the clutches of an errant dragon, he expects she’ll murmur “my hero!” and swoon at his feet. Instead he finds her gratitude tainted with loathing for the man everyone in Caerfaen thinks a traitor. That’s fine with Morgan. He’s on a desperate mission, and a woman in his life would complicate things. Someone on the Royal Council is selling secrets. Morgan, known derisively as the Dark Knight because of his half-Orskan heritage, is the prime suspect. So he’s going undercover, posing as the traitor hes thought to be. Hunting spies and dodging assassins from the back alleys of Caerfaen to the glittering halls of power, he finds that any misstep could lead to catastrophe. He reluctantly involves Marissa, using her as cover for a clandestine meeting with the shadowy spymaster who sent him on this mission. When a notorious Rhuddlani agent shows up instead, Marissa assumes the worst and vows to expose his treachery. If that werent enough to complicate things, Morgan also has to exterminate the dragon, outwit both a determined assassin and a tempting seductress, and stay one jump ahead of the suspicious Watch Captain eager to arrest him. Most daunting of all, he must cope with the unexpected attraction he feels towards Marissa, the damsel in distress who despises him for the traitor hes pretending to be. If Morgans going to save the kingdom, win the girl and keep his head attached, hell need to step up his game. Because the traitor he seeks is lurking in the shadows. And his scheme calls not just for the betrayal of Caerfaen, but also the destruction of Morgan McRobbie.
